DOGS

MINOR PUPPY (1)

1st SIMMONS PENNYLOCK SIONI OF GLYNELL

Alone but a promising puppy that could have won in strong company.  Well schooled, he moved confidently if at this stage a little loose at the front.  Well angulated throughout with a good lay of shoulder, a good bend of stifle, well set down docks and tight, neat feet.  Excellent bone and substance for his age.  Well proportioned head with well shaped eye giving a kind expression despite his fairly wide blaze.

PUPPY  (4)

1st GILLS’ BRENROS TAKE ME RIGHT ROUND

Smart, refined dog who scores in breed points.  Particularly good head proportions, eye shape and expression. Good length of neck and well set down hocks which contribute to a picture of quality.  Needs to tighten up on the move.  Presently moving a little wide and loose at front.  Hopefully with time he will develop in the hindquarters as he is inclined to slope away when stacked and not display the breed characteristic rise over the loin.  I would also like him to be more confident in the ring but all these points can develop with time and he is a quality dog worth waiting for BPD.

2nd CARRS’ GEMILL PRINCE OF THEIVES

Better in front than 1, he moved confidently and soundly.  Good angulation and a strong but pleasing head and expression.  He was well presented.  My real concern is his size.  He is big for his age and I hope he does not go over the height called for in the standard but I realise that different breeding lines develop at different rates.

3rd BUCKWELL’S KILLENA ICEMAN

JUNIOR 7 (1abs)

1st EVANS’ COEDYBRAIN RYAN

A dog with much to admire.  He displays that mix of strength and refinement that I look for in the breed.  Balanced body proportions with a good reach of neck into well laid shoulders.  This excellent front assembly and well developed hindquarters enabled him to move with accuracy and drive off good tight feet.  Correct topline with slight rise over the loin.  Short coupled.  Well presented in good coat and condition.  Just right for his age.  Should have a promising future.

2nd WALTON AND COFFIN’S AM.CH. COLE CREEK HAWK-EYE AT HILLPARK. IMP USA.

Well made dog of nice size.  He has a good front and well developed hindquarters which enabled him to move powerfully and with drive.  He too is not overdone and is just right for his age, Welsh Springers should not be finished at 2 years old.  Another with good feet, so important in a working breed.

3rd WRIGHT’S AMBLELIGHT ALIOTH

SPECIAL YEARLING 3 (1 abs)

1st SUMMERS’ HILLROBIN HAMBLET

Won this class with ease.  Of course he still has some maturing to do but all the essential ingredients are already displayed.  Dog of correct size with balanced body proportions and good angulation throughout.  Short coupled.  Coat of good colour and texture.  Best of heads with a kind gentle expression.  Merry and active on the move, retaining his good topline, with the rise over the loin.

2nd McANDREW’S AMBLELIGHT MULBERRY

Plenty of strength all through but lacking refinement.  Could be better angulated, rather straight in stifle.  Moved confidently but carried his tail too high.

NOVICE 3 (1abs)

1st GILLS’ BRENROS TAKE ME RIGHT ROUND

2nd McANDREW’S AMBLELIGHT MULBERRY

GRADUATE (3)

1st SUMMERS’ HILLROBIN HAMBLET

2ND MASSON’S PEAKDALE IESTYN AP DAFYDD

Compact, short coupled dog displaying many positive breed points but maybe there could be a little more of him all through.  He is narrow in front and this was reflected in his movement.  Well proportioned head with soft expression but again could be a little stronger all through.

3rd  REYNOLDS’ KYLOWEN QUIN OF BENOVEOR

POST GRADUATE (6)

1st  IRVINE’S BUSHWACKER CHILLI PEPPER OF BROOMWALK

A young dog with some maturing still to do.  He is well made with good angulation throughout.  This was reflected in his excellent movement, with an impressive free, ground covering action.  In good coat of a rich red colour.  Well muscled quarters. Masculine, well proportioned head, good eye and stop and well chiselled to give refinement.  To be hypercritical I would like to see more of a rise over the loin.

2nd EVANS’ BWGAN LLWYD

Scores well for breed type.  Some might call him old fashioned but as the breed standard hasn’t changed maybe it is some of the others in the ring that have altered.  Has taken time to fill his frame and is a little longer in the couplings than I would prefer but in full coat he appears quite balanced.  Not as positive in movement as 1 and this cost him the class.

3rd RIDGE’s SAANU NORTHERN LIGHTS

MID LIMIT 2 (1 abs)

1st TULLY’s HIGHCLARE TYCOON

Of good type, he reminds me so much of his dam.  Excellent body proportions.  Good depth of body and spring of rib but all in a compact frame.  Front movement at first appeared a little careless but improved as he settled.  Again good feet which based on this entry appear to have improved.

LIMIT 7 (1 abs)

1st TESTER’S AVILT NERERUSOBEK

My find of the day.  Although I have admired this dog from the ringside, you really do need to go over him to appreciate his quality.  His handler free stands him, something seldom seen in this breed and he can appear to be stuffy and lacking in reach of neck. Going over the dog this clearly isn’t the case.  He is an unexaggerated, typical Welsh.  He has good bone and substance and well developed ribbing but with that refinement called for in the breed.  He is short coupled with an excellent topline displaying the rise over the loin.  He was in good coat and condition although some points of presentation could be improved.  His head is unmistakably that of a Welsh with good proportions, a well shaped eye and chiselling giving a kind, biddable expression.  Moved on a loose lead, he was undoubtedly the best mover in the class RCC.

2nd WILLIAMS’ TREBETTYN BEVIN BOY JW

At first I thought this one would be my winner.  He shouts breed type and is a good mix of strength and refinement.  He has the best of heads being masculine but without coarseness.  Unfortunately his movement let him down particularly moving close behind and this cost him the class.

3rd THOMAS’ BOWDONIA SPECIAL EFFECTS

OPEN 5 (1 abs)

1st MORGAN AND ROBERTS’S CWRT AFON CADFOR

Here I found what I was looking for, a well made quality dog who displayed this both standing and on the move  He is so well constructed being so clean in the neck and shoulders and in his hindquarters having a good bend of stifle and well set down hocks.  When asked to move, he did so confidently and with a precise ground covering action really driving from his quarters.  He has good cat like feet and in motion gave the impression that he could go all day.  There is very little I would change about this dog and he could be my template for the breed standard.  I was delighted to award him the CC, his third thus giving him his title and with the full agreement of my co-judge Mr Mansel Young B.I.S.

2nd MASSON’S COEDYBRAIN GERAINT OF MANMOEL

Really appeals for bred type.  Plenty of strength and substance in a compact body of the correct size.  Most appealing head with a soft expression.  His movement let him down a little as he was inclined to weave at the front.

3rd LAZENBY’S MELLADOMINA MUST BE SO

VETERAN  (7)

1st WREN’S SAANU COPPER BEECH AT GWYMARREN JW SHCM

I have judged this dog on several occasions but I have never seen him look better than today.  I seriously considered him for the RCC but he flagged in the challenge.  He looked really balanced and he was carrying just the right amount of weight for his frame.  He has a good topline which he retained on the move.  Excellent tight cat like feet.  Welsh should be a slow maturing breed and I think it is a pity that some of our top winners disappear from the ring at far too young an age.  They should be capable of winning the highest honours from Veteran and this boy nearly did just that.

2nd JANES’ SH CH COEDYBRAIN DAFYDD

A favourite of mine and a dog who is indeed still capable of winning top honours.  Today he was beaten by a dog on top form but in terms of breed type he is hard to beat.

3rd BUCKWELL’S KILLENA DANCE INTO THE LIGHT

SPECIAL BEGINNERS (3 1abs)

1st BATEY’S AMBLELIGHT CENTAURI

Positions in this class were decided on movement.  This dog’s movement was more accurate all round.  Plenty of bone and substance although for his age he could be a little deeper in the loin.  Somewhat straight in stifle.  Pleasing head, good feet and well presented.

2nd McANDREW’S AMBLELIGHT MULBERRY

SPECIAL WORKING (1)

1st JONES’ PENNYLOCK QUIN JW

Alone but a quality dog that could have won in strong company.  Again a good balance of strength and refinement.  Well proportioned body with the correct topline heal on the move.  Moving a little close behind.  Typical head although to be hypercritical he is a little broad in skull for my liking.

GOOD CITIZEN (5)

1st WREN’S GWYMARREN WINTER STORM JW

A strongly built dog well off for bone and substance, very deep in body..  On first inspection, I thought he was carrying too much weight but going over him it was clear that this was not the case.  Well presented in rich red coat and good condition.  A really typical head with a kindly expression.  Moved out well when settled.

2nd TUBB’S PARKMIST MASTER DANCER FOR ALSUTU

Admired this one for his overall balance.  He is compact, short coupled dog with a good topline showing the rise over the loin.  Moved out well using the big ring to full advantage.

BITCHES

May I first congratulate the officers and committee for a superbly run show, and for the very kind invitation to judge here once again.  Overall, the quality was extremely high, but I was a little concerned to witness such a variety of size creeping into the breed.  Size does matter, to coin a phrase, and owners need to keep watch on this when selecting their breeding stock.  On the plus side, toplines and heads have certainly improved since I last judged, and presentation was of the highest order today.

Minor Puppy: (6 1 abs)

1st: Tully’s KIMDALE DOTSAND DASHES

Lovely head, with good eye colour and correct balance.  Very compact in body, with ample bone and tight feet.  Good angulations throughout. Moved extremely confidently for one so young, making full use of her tail.  Just lost out in maturity to puppy winner, although a very close decision.

2nd: Duncan’s REDFRITH BETTY BOOP

Found her a little finer in skull, with very little stop. Body shape quite correct, with good shoulder placement and well angulated quarters. Moved quite soundly and happily. Has time on her side to develop.

3rd: Jones’ PENNYLOCK SIONED AT TROSLEY

Puppy: (4)

1st: Thomas’ BOWDONIA SWEET DREAMS.

Loved her head, with a clear stop, and melting expression.  Possesses the cleanest of shoulders, long and sloping, well sprung ribs and good depth to body.  Moved with effortless freedom, and shown in super condition.  I only hope her growth pattern will now slow down, and if so, I am confident of a great future for her. Best Puppy in Show

2nd: Sutherland’s JULITA REZENELLA

Another extremely promising puppy, with a gorgeous head, and lovely balanced body throughout.  Shown in tip-top condition, hind movement was not so positive as my winner, and when her owner can inject more confidence and steadiness into her handling, she will trouble the best.

3rd: Woodward’s BOWDONIA CHASING DREAMS

Junior: (6 1 abs)

1st: Jones’ PENNYLOCK RUBY RED

Strong bitch, pleasing head, so well balanced, clean in neck and shoulders, with powerful ribbing and very compact body.  Moved quite soundly, maintaining her posture throughout, with a great flowing tail action.  Good bone, and tight feet. Presented in good order.

2nd: Abbot & Cemis’ NORLINGTON NECTAR

Another quality bitch , shown in good condition.  Very expressive head, strength in neck, with correct front assembly.  Found her to be a little straight in stifle, which somewhat restricted her hind movement.  Correct body proportions, with good bone and lively tail action.

3rd: Masson’s COEDYBRAIN REBECCA OF MANMOEL

Special Yearling  (3)

1st: Morgan & Robert’s CWRT AFON HAFINA

Super bitch, which really caught my eye when entering the ring.  True Welsh head, with lovely expressive eyes that could melt you away.  So clean in neck and shoulders, and correct front assembly.  Moved very true and effortlessly, with super topline and tail action maintained throughout.  Handler was always at one with her, and presented in prime condition.  Considered her for top honours today, but I felt she just needed a little more time to become the finished article.

2nd: Abbot & Cemis’ NORLINGTON NECTAR

3RD: Wren’s GWYNMARREN SUMMER SOLSTICE

Novice:  (6  1 abs)

1st: Massons’ PENNYLOCK RHIAN OF MANMOEL

Built on slightly stronger mould, but has good head proportions with nice chiselling and correct eye colour.  Quite compact in body shape, with good spring of rib, and maintained her shape when in profile and moving.  Used her tail well, with powerful hindquarters, although I would have preferred a little les width in front action.

2nd: Tester’s AVILT NEFERURE

More refined in head, and body proportions.  Clean in neck and shoulders, and show in lovely condition.  I just found her to be lacking that extra sparkle and drive in hind movement.

3rd: Smith’s CHERRYHEATH’S MISS HUSTLE

Graduate: (7  2 abs)

1st: Thomas’ SHERDREW IN YOUR DREAMS WITH BOWDONIA

Very feminine bitch, with lovely dark eye.  Clean in neck and shoulders, with good ribbing, and correct feet and rear quarters.  Enough bone, and possesses really tight feet.  Movement was very sound, but better tail carriage would have been a bonus.

2nd: Barkley’s CHERRYHEATH’S MISS CHIEF

Another quality bitch, built on slightly stronger lines.  Nice shape to both head and body, with well sprung ribs, and good bone.  Just lost out to my winner in hind movement.  Handled very confidently, and presentation first class.

3rd: Dixon’s MENSTONIA FAIR CHANCE

Post Graduate: (7  1 abs)

1st: Leary’s HASLEMOUNT HEULWEN

Most elegant of bitches, screamed Welsh to me, with lovely head and eye colour.  So clean in neck and shoulders, with sufficient ribbing and bone.  Slightly less angulated in hindquarters, but she moved quite soundly and happily.  Shown in lovely coat and condition, and one that was deep in my thoughts in the challenge.  Won this class with ease.

2nd: Thomas’ SHERDREW IN YOUR DREAMS WITH BOWDONIA

3rd: Jones’ PENNYLOCK QUEEN LIZZY

Mid Limit: (4)

1st: Janes’ COEDYBRAIN NELLI

Very compact, real Welsh head, clean in neck, with good shoulder placement, excellent ribbing, and standing on good legs and feet.  Super bone.  Moved soundly, with strength coming from well-angulated hindquarters.  Always carried her topline correctly, with good tailset and lively action.

2nd: Wren’s GLENBROWS PLAYTIME AT GWYNMARREN

Pleasing in outline, but today found her carrying a few extra pounds.  Well proportioned head, plenty of ribbing, and show in good coat.  Strode out well, always at one with her handler, and very sound.  Another with great legs and feet.

3rd: Buckwell’s KILLENA ADDDICTED TO LOVE

Limit: (6  1 abs)

1st: Frost’s MENSTONIA MISTY MEMORIES OF COCHNAID

Lovely balance to her, with good head and eye, correct depth of muzzle, clean shoulder placement, with well sprung ribs.  Shown in gleaming condition, with rich red coat, and moved well with handler.  Another in my thoughts for top awards.  I am sure her time will come.

2nd: Frost’s BUSHWACKER ATOMIC KITTEN

Good head proportions, but found her a little upright in shoulder, which rather spoilt overall balance, resulting in poor topline.  Shown in good coat and condition, and handled as always with utmost precision.

3rd: Carr’s CERYSAN TAKE A CHANCE AT GEMILL

Open:  (8)

I felt very honoured to have judged such a quality open class, probably the best I have ever had the opportunity of handling, and I am sure that my final line-up could have and will change places many times in the future.

1st: Tain’s SH CH INGSMAN ACER AT TAIMERE JW SH CM

This was the star of the day.  Beautiful bitch with very balanced head, lovely eye colour, with melting expression, and good depth of muzzle.  She has superb body proportions, with great ribbing and best of legs and feet.  Shown in gleaming condition, and just screamed Welsh to me.  She moved as one with handler, showing great drive from rear, with lovely tail action, and never once losing her balanced profile.  Presentation was of the highest order, and I was more than happy to award her the CC and later BOS and RBIS.

2nd: Walton’s HILLPARK ROYAL GOLD

Another superb Welsh, so typical of this kennel, with proud head carriage, good eye colour and expression.  Clean in neck and shoulders, with compact and well ribbed body, and correct in both front and rear assembly.  Show in super coat and condition.  Although movement was really sound, I felt that she just lacked that extra bit of sparkle that could have made all the difference on the day.  Nevertheless, could not deny her the Reserve CC., and I am sure that her title will follow in the near future.

3rd: Janes’ COEDYBRAIN GLYNIS

Veteran:  (8  1 abs)

1st: Janes’ COEDYBRAIN EIRIANNE

Worthy winner of this class, and her overall condition belies her seven plus years.  Shown in full coat, with a lovely head, so clean in neck and shoulders, with well ribbed body, and correct topline.  Moved freely and soundly, with powerful hindquarters, and was obviously enjoying every moment of her time in the ring.  Handled to perfection.

2nd: Walton’s HILLPARK CRIMSON GLORY

Very little in age difference, and possesses many of the same qualities of my winner.  Very feminine head, with good depth of muzzle, compact in body, and standing on best of legs and feet.  Moved soundly and happily with handler.  Just preferred overall finish of winner, and she did have a tendency to dip in topline when standing.

3rd: Tully’s CH HIGHCLARE ENERGIZER

Special Beginners:  (6  1 abs)

1st: Sutherland’s JULITA REZENELLA

2nd: Evans’ SYCHARTH HOB Y DERRI  DANDO

Very feminine, perhaps a shade too narrow in foreface.  Found her a little slighter in bone, but shown in good condition, and strode out well on the move.

3rd: Smith’s CHERRYHEATH’S MISS HUSTLE

Special Working:  (2  1 abs)

1st: Evans’ SYCHARTH CATRIN

On her own in this class, has pleasing head with good eye colour, slightly long in neck and body, although shown in good coat and condition.  Has enough bone, and moved soundly and happily, with a lovely tail action.

Good Citizen Scheme:  (5  1 abs)

1st: Buckwell’s KILLENA ADDICATED TO LOVE

Nicely balanced, with good shape to head and body, and standing on good legs and feet. Moved well in this class, and never let her handler down.

2nd:  Dixon’s MENSTONIA FAIR CHANCE

3rd: Wren’s GWYNMARREN SUMMER SOLSTICE

REFEREE

I was appointed as Referee for the show, the appointment to include judging Best Brace and the KC Breeders Competition.

BEST BRACE (4 entries, 2 absent)

1st Frost’s beautifully matched pair, moving as one. They displayed  correct movement with drive from powerful rear assemblies. Presented in immaculate condition. Sympathetic handling completed the picture.

2nd Walton’s delightful pair in top condition, but giving their handler a hard time! They enjoyed the experience of being moved together, and much to the delight of those at ringside, apparently thought it was playtime.

KC BREEDERS COMPETITON

Three teams were entered for the competition, which was a joy to see. All exhibits displayed superb movement and were well handled. My final decision was based on type and performance of the four winning exhibits together. I chose Tully’s Highclare team. For me, they were all from the same mould, looking so well together. They were well schooled and in complete harmony with each other and with their handlers.
